On Democracy

Posted by Godefroi on March 18, 2010

From Merriam-Webster:

Function: noun

Inflected Form(s): plural de·moc·ra·cies
Etymology: Middle French democratie, from Late Latin democratia, from Greek dēmokratia, from dēmos + -kratia -cracy
And from Wikipedia:
Democracy is a political government carried out either directly by the people (direct democracy) or by means of elected representatives of the people (Representative democracy). The term is derived from the Greek: δημοκρατία – (dēmokratía) “rule of the people”,[1] which was coined from δῆμος (dêmos) “people” and κράτος (krátos) “power“…
“RULE OF [or “by”] THE PEOPLE”…”PEOPLE POWER”
Question of the day: Why is it that so many who are affiliated with, or have affinity for, the Democratic Party support Government’s “Rule OVER the People?”

QOTD – How big is 1.9 trillion

Posted by Godefroi on February 5, 2010

An hour is a relatively short amount of time.  10 hours is a normal workday for me.  16 hours is a tiresomely long workday.  24 hours is, of course, a standard Day.  A week is comprised of 168 hours.  Average month is 720, and a year is 8766 (including the 1/4 day that we only count every so often).

The Obama-Pelose-Reid unholy triad just upped the Government’s borrowing limit by $1.9 Trillion dollars….the largest debt limit increase in U.S. history.

The tie-in is the QOTD, courtesy of the AP.

“1.9 trillion hours ago, or almost 220 million years ago, dinosaurs were just beginning to dominate the Earth.”

Let me put that another way.  I’ll be 41 years old in just a few days…that means that I was born 359,406 hours ago (give or take).  Put that in TRILLIONS, we get 0.00000036 trillion hours.  If you’re 40-ish, think about how many HOURS you’ve lived…jeez, just think about how many hours you’ve wasted…and compare that to the QOTD.  Even if you’re not a math genius, that number is staggering.

Looking at it another way, fmr President Bush and the attendant Congress spent money like a drunken sailor, a statement with which nearly everyone – Right and Left – would agree.  President Obama now wants to increase that by 270%, to an unprecedented level, in order to institute programs and policies which history has shown numerous times to be ineffective at best, lethal at worst.

So…at this point I’ve blathered such that I can’t recall my point of intent (I bet being up for 23 hours doesn’t help)…but what I want to say right now is this:  Mr. President, PLEASE learn a history lesson, and STOP trying to spend us out of our current slowdown.  While you and Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Reid tend to characterize your collectively proposed profligacy as “investment’, both history and human nature should show you that these massive expenditures are as wise as setting all of that cash on fire.  Entitlements breed dependency which breeds need for more entitlements, ad infinitum.  Excesive taxation breeds evasion which breeds government’s need for higher taxation, again ad infinitum.  You’re so enamored with “sustainability”…how about we focus on a sustainable economy?  The path you’ve chosen to pursue leads only, and inexorably, to ruin.

What else is there to say, but God Help Us All.

Stupid Obama Advisor of the Day

Posted by Godefroi on October 9, 2009

President Barack Obama’s adviser on Muslim affairs [excuse me, why do we have one of these?], Dalia Mogahed said on the Islam Channel [the what?!?] program Muslimah Dilemma earlier this week:

even many Muslims associated Sharia with “maximum criminal punishments” and “laws that… to many people seem unequal to women,” but added: “Part of the reason that there is this perception of Sharia is because Sharia is not well understood and Islam as a faith is not well understood.”

Let me boil that down.  Many Muslims have a negative opinion of Sharia because they don’t understand Sharia and Islam.  Got that?  Many Muslims don’t understand Islam.

That’s fantastic advice for her to pass on to Mr. Obama.  I hope he includes that tidbit in his next pandering speech to “the Muslim world”.

Oh yeah – full article at Daily Telegraph.

Meaningless

Posted by Godefroi on October 9, 2009

A once-respected award for humanitarianism has now lost all meaning.

Nobel Peace Prize Is Awarded to President Obama

Oct. 9 (Bloomberg) — President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” the Nobel Committee said.

Three former U.S. Presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize.  Jimmy Carter won this prize after more than a decade of international activism, misguided though it may have been.  Woodrow Wilson for creating the League of Nations (at least he had an accomplishment).  Teddy Roosevelt after he negotiated the end of the Russo-Japanese War (again, something actually accomplished).

One has to wonder if Jagland’s affiliation with Social Democrats had any bearing on this.  Hmmm.

What has Obama actually DONE to win this prize?

“The Nobel Committee has in particular looked at Obama’s vision and work toward a world without atomic weapons,” Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the five-member Nobel committee said in an interview broadcast on Norway’s TV2 today. “Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics.”

In short, he’s done NOTHING.  He’s made a few speeches – WOW – which as of yet have accomplished nothing.  Even the nuclear arsenal over which he has command is still undiminished.

And the vaunted “vision and work” and “extraordinary efforts”?  It’s all occurred since he took office less than 9 months ago.

Pitiful.  Pathetic.  Worthless.  Meaningless.

Update: K. Carpenter shows us how far back this actually goes.  Not only was Obama nominated LESS THAN TWO WEEKS into office, but the nomination invitations were sent out way back in September of 2008.  Good Grief!

Update 2: Jim Geraghty weighs in

Let Me Be Clear: We Must Credit Obama For His Accomplishments

There are no longer any U.S. forces in Iraq; the war there is over.

Afghanistan is finally stabilized, with the populace reassured and President Karzai’s public trust reinvigorated by free and fair elections.

Israelis and Palestinians are finally working together to build a lasting peace.

Through our forthright and clear denunciation of brutality, the Iranian protesters have had their fraudulent election canceled and true democracy is celebrated by every young man and young woman in the streets of Tehran.

The Guantanamo Bay prison is closed.

Through our diplomatic nudging, China has made great strides in its treatment of dissent, and the Dalai Lama is recognized by every world leader as a great man of wisdom.

Eastern Europeans in places like Poland and the Czech Republic sleep easily, no longer worried about the nefarious ambitions of the Russian bear.

A crisis in Honduras has been averted through the measured, deliberate effort of the administration.

No one in Asia worries about North Korean missiles any longer.

Pakistan is stabilized, and their citizens are reaching out to India in places like Mumbai.

In Egypt, after Obama’s speech, the government has never spent more time paying attention to dissenters like the Muslim Brotherhood.

Finally, the potential chaos from a global recession has been averted, as the U.S. economy has come roaring back to lead the world to new prosperity.

Come on, folks. With a record like that, Obama was a shoo-in.

Heh!

Oh Goody!

Posted by Godefroi on June 16, 2009

We’re already trying to stave off global nuclear obliteration at the hands of the dangerous and unstable leaders of NoKo and Iran…but at least they have fairly strong security infrastructure (well, perhaps not Iran right now).

Who thinks THIS is a good idea?

Iraq Nuclear Power for Peaceful Purposes

Iraqi Minister of Science and Technology Ra’id Fahmi has announced that his country is seeking to build a nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes.

The reactor will be used to generate electricity in lieu of oil.  [uh-huh]

Our fearless feckless “leadership” has expressed grave concerns about “militants” of the Taliban getting  nuclear material from Pakistan…what about the AQI remnants in Iraq?

It just gets better all the time, doesn’t it?

Is This It?

The Dear NORK-Dork, our favorite nuclear-armed Nutjob, recently declared:

“Our nuclear deterrent will be … a merciless offensive means to deal a just retaliatory strike to those who touch the country’s dignity and sovereignty even a bit…”

Do you think he meant something like this?

U.N. Security Council imposes new sanctions on North Korea

Maobama Wants YOU

Posted by Godefroi on March 18, 2009

Taken from a commentary at American Thinker.

A sitting President of the United States is “organizing a political organization loyal to him, bound by a pledge, outside the government and existing party apparatus. The historical precedents are ominous.”

[…]

But there is a new organization on the political scene — “Organizing for America,” announced by President Barack Obama in late January but officially unfurled last weekend.

Obama describes OFA as a “grass-roots movement” but OFA is a “project” of the Democratic Natrional Committee.

As Politico reported, OFA will take the 10 million person database built up by the Obama campaign “to mobilize support for the president’s legislative agenda.”

A visit to the OFA website reveals that supporters are not simply asked to sign up, they are asked to take a pledge. A pledge to support — not the flag, not the constitution, not the country, not even the Democratic party, but Obama and his “bold plan.” OFA does not use the Democratic Party logo but the “O”-shaped logo of the Obama campaign in which the red white and blue of the flag are abstracted to soft pastel colors.
[…]

You will not find any mention of OFA`s governing structure, their budget, their bylaws, or their officers at the OFA website. Donations to the website go to the DNC, but OFA is managed out of the White House. If you click on the comments button, you are taken to a link to the White House email.
[…]

So we have a Movement — this is their term, not mine — organized by, and loyal to, a sitting President. Pledge canvassers, armed with your name, will ask you to pledge loyalty to the President too. A president whose term has already become a permanent campaign, is signing up ground forces in a mass organization pledged to personal loyalty to their Leader.
Does anyone know of any historical precedents for this in the United States?
Did Mitch Stewart, youthful director of OFA, who asks Obama’s acolytes to organize “neighborhood by neighborhood”  study anything at school about Mao‘s “Red Guards?
How about Fidel Castro‘s “widespread system of neighborhood informers“?

Or Hugo Chavez‘s use of “neighborhood committees“?

Did Stewart learn anything about democracy at all?
Do any of Obama’s pledged servants understand why a sitting president has no business creating and deploying his own supporters to help organize their neighbors?
Keep in mind that these acolytes have renounced any thought of questioning the actual policies of the maximum leader. Whatever he says, they are for it. They have given their word.

And they are coming to have a talk with you.

Remember, people, that he stated that he wants a “civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as our MILITARY.  Isn’t this a great way to get that ball rolling, under the guise of a harmless association of mere political supporters?
As Thomas Lifson wrote, “This is not the way a democracy is supposed to operate.

Do Parents Have Rights?

Posted by Godefroi on December 18, 2008

A Letter from Michael Farris,
President of ParentalRights.org.

Dear Friend of Parental Rights,

I was in the United States Senate this past week meeting with lawyers for a Senate office.  They told me directly what I have been hearing indirectly on a regular basis ever since the election.

Those who want to change family policy in America to comply with international law are preparing a full-scale effort to seek ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child during this next Congress.  Barbara Boxer recently told a planning group that they intend to use children’s health care as leverage to seek ratification of this UN children’s rights treaty.

Please link to our website to see a succinct summary of the problems with this UN treaty.

The strength of their forces has been greatly increased with the addition of Hillary Clinton as the nominee for Secretary of State.  She will have direct control over the submission of this treaty to the Senate and will acquire the authority under international law to sign any other treaty on any subject.

Hillary Clinton was the person who made the announcement for the Convention on the Rights of the Child when her husband’s administration signed the treaty.  Seeking its ratification is a lifelong dream for her.

Our situation is grim if we were to look only at the position of the elected officials.

However, recent post-election polling demonstrates that almost 70% of Americans do not believe that the use of international law in American courts on such matters is appropriate.  Less than 20% favor the use of international law. (The rest are undecided).   Virtually every sub-group in America opposes this kind of use of international law.

America is on our side. However, we have to be able to get the word out to help people hear the truth about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Our proposed Parental Rights Amendment will permanently stop this treaty.  So we have a one-two punch planned for the internationalists.

First, we must build a huge grassroots movement of patriotic Americans who believe that good families should be able to raise their children without worrying about compliance with international law.

Second, these same grassroots forces need to convince our elected officials that we are not content with defeating this treaty for today alone.  We insist on a permanent solution.  We need the Parental Rights Amendment.

I need you to do two things to help this become a reality.  First, please send a copy of this letter to everyone you know who believes in parental rights and American patriotism.

Second, we need to raise a war chest to get prepared to launch a massive grassroots campaign.  The other side has millions of dollars left in their campaign coffers, and they have the President of the United States, the Secretary of State and all the media waiting to carry their message.

We can win the debate because we have the truth on our side.  And we have public opinion.  But we won’t win if we can’t reach people.

Will you please make as big a gift as you can to support Parentalrights.org?

Here is what they are saying about us.  At the hearing which featured Barbara Boxer, one of the speakers said that the people who will oppose this treaty are the “narcissistic sovereignty crowd.”  In other words, those who love America first are so guilty of excessive self-love that he describes us as having the mental illness of narcissism.

This is their real heart.  Not only do they want international law to control our families.  They think that we are mentally ill for loving America.

It is time for those of us who believe in loving our families and loving America to rise up!  We will not surrender this country or our children to such people.

Get involved today!  The battle is about to begin.

For God, family, and America,

Michael Farris

Good Intentions

Posted by Godefroi on December 4, 2008

They say the road to you-know-where is paved with them…I’ll add that the aggregate contains many “Goodwill Gestures”.

For example (via Israel National News):

Two Fatah-aligned terrorists who were pardoned by outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert helped plot a bombing at the Tel Aviv Central Bus Station on Tuesday that was foiled at the last minute by Israeli intelligence agents.

[…]

The Islamic Jihad terrorist group in Jenin coordinated the planned attack with Al Aqsa, which Klein explained did not inform the media because of the amnesty agreement and the prime minister’s plan to free another 250 terrorists as a “goodwill” gesture to Abbas.

Freeing even more captured terrorists sounds like a splendid idea – being nice to them will make them LIKE us.  After all, it’s worked so well in the past.

These particular Muslim SCUM committed atrocity after atrocity over the course of three days…for what?

Nice

Posted by Godefroi on November 11, 2008

A little refreshing, if Freudian, honesty from the Obama team reported at NewsBusters.

The co-chair of Barack Obama’s Transition Team, Valerie Jarrett, appeared on Meet the Press this weekend and used, shall we say, an interesting word to described what she thinks Barack Obama will be doing in January when he’s officially sworn into office. She told Tom Brokaw that Obama will be ready to “rule” on day one. It’s a word that reflects the worst fears that people have for Obama the “arrogant,” the “messiah,” that imagines he’s here to “rule” instead of govern.

Jarret told Brokaw that “given the daunting challenges that we face, it’s important that president elect Obama is prepared to really take power and begin to rule day one.

We already knew that’s what was in mind, didn’t we?
