A Defending Crusader…

The best defense is to be good and offensive…or something like that.

Let’s say you live with your wife and three kids in the deep woods, in the far North.  Bear country…Grizzly country.

Imagine that next to your log cabin is a bear cave.  And imagine that on a daily basis you taunt the old Grizzly inside.  You throw food toward him, then throw rocks when he comes toward it.  You shoot him with pellets and darts at every opportunity.  And  laugh.

He occasionally takes swipes at you with his massive clawed paw, but you always escape with minor scratches at most.  These swipes anger you, however.  YOU are the master here.  So you up the ante with more taunting and somewhat heavier ammo – not enough to actually destroy the old bear, but enough to keep him thoroughly on edge, perhaps even pissed off.  Your family tries to warn you that you shouldn’t keep tormenting the bear.  They beg you to leave him alone, but since you’re right – and you’re the Human, after all – you continue, as is your right as the higher being.

One day while you’re alone out skiiing alone in the back hills, said bear decides that he’s had enough.  He rampages through your house, destroys everything in sight, including your family.  You hear the noise and rush home, but it’s too late.  Only your wife survives, and chances are that she will die in your arms momentarily.  She says to you in a ragged whisper “We begged you to leave him alone”, and is gone.

Do you take responsibility for the carnage?

A New York Daily News editorial brings this analogy to life in a story of a poor woman in Gaza.

The collateral damage that has been inflicted on the residents of Gaza is a sorrowful consequence of living under the rule of rocket-firing fanatics. It is because of Hamas, and only Hamas, that Palestinians are suffering.

At least some of them know the identity of their tormentors. A New York Times dispatch captured an excruciating moment that took place in a hospital morgue, where a mother had just found half of the body of her 17-year-old daughter.

“May God exterminate Hamas!” screamed the woman in crystal-clear understanding that the terrorist band’s reckless, inhuman actions had brought death to her child.

You see, she gets it.  She knows where the blame lies for the horrific death of her child.  It’s not with the bear, but with her arrogant and hateful husband.

I hope this woman lives to see the end of the senseless hostility.
