Persecution of the Day

Posted by Godefroi on December 8, 2008

Again, I’ve been remiss in elevating this particular topic.

This report comes from the Maldives.  Readers may recall that just about a year ago, the Maldivian government decreed that citizens of the Maldives who are not already Muslim were no longer going to be considered citizens at all.

Non Muslims are to be denied Maldivian citizenship in the new Constitution, after 78 members of the Peoples Special Majlis (Constitutional Assembly) voted on 19 November 2007 in favor to approve an amendment that requires all Maldivian citizens to be Muslims. Prominent Maldivian lawyers have expressed concern following the passage of the clause in the new Constitution stating fears that the prerequisite to be a Muslim for Maldivian citizenship would create complications. Lawyers predicted that the new clause would deprive a number of current citizens of Maldivian citizenship, resulting in some Maldivians becoming stateless after the proclamation of the new Constitution.

“Under the existing Constitution, every child born to a Maldivian mother or father is a Maldivian citizen. But we know there are non-Muslims among them. There are such children living in Australia and Europe. They have Maldivian passports. Under the existing Constitution, it is possible for a foreigner of another faith to become a Maldivian citizen. Therefore, with the passage of this clause, a lot of Maldivians will be stripped of citizenship the day the new Constitution comes into effect,” Member for Seenu Atoll and prominent lawyer Mr. Husnu al Suood, told reporters on 19 November 2007. Other lawyers have noted that Islam allowed Muslim men to marry Jewish and Christian women and that the new clause would suppress the rights of such spouses.

A new development occurs in this land of the Human Rights Champions, one which probably surprises noone.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs announced on Saturday that it would block a website promoting Christianity aimed at Maldivians.

Minister Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari said the ministry had consulted experts to find ways to block the site, which was both in Dhivehi and English. He did not reveal the website’s address.

Ah, censorship…the refuge of the fearful totalitarian.  Yes, fearful.

Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed Ahmed, known for his inflammatory sermons, agreed that all anti-Islamic websites should be banned. “Although this is an Islamic society, some Maldivians’ faith in Islam is not very strong” he said.

If they have access to these websites because their belief in Islam is weak, there might be a negative impact.”

If the faith of Maldivians is strong enough, even hundreds of anti-Islamic websites would not work,” he said.

You see?  The obvious implication here is that if these folks are not already drenched with Islam, and therefore strong in their beliefs, just having ACCESS to one Christian website would be detrimental.

Also, it appears that blocking this site isn’t all that they want to accomplish.

A similar view was upheld by scholar Sheikh Usman Abdullah who said that as the Maldives is recognised as a wholly Muslim society, all anti-Islamic activities, including websites promoting Christianity, should be prohibited.

Finally, just to add to my previous rants about the uselessness of the U.N.

Samuel Wallace, International Christian Concern’s regional manager for South Asia, said he was alarmed to hear officials in the Maldives were seeking to block Christian websites.

“As a member of the United Nations, the Maldives has an obligation to protect the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” he said. “This includes in Article 18 the ‘right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.

I realize that this instance is not typical of the persecution that I normally will highlight.  No one got killed, injured, displaced, or otherwise terrorized.  Still, outlawing Christianity fits the description.
