Who is That Prophet?

Posted by Godefroi on November 24, 2008

This is part of a “debate” I engaged in with a Muslim in England.  If you’re not into exegesis, proof-texts, and such, feel free to skip this one.

The opening salvo:

MOSES IS HIGHLY REGARDED IN ISLAM AS THE GREAT PROPHET WHO FORETOLD THE COMING OF MUHAMMAD, HIS SUCCESSOR… THERE IS MUCH IN THE LIFE OF MUHAMMAD THAT IS IMPLICITLY REMINISCENT OF THE MOSES TRADITION.

“I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and I will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.” Deuteronomy 18:18.

And he (Moses) said, the Lord came from Sinai, and rose from Seir unto them; he shined Forth from mount Paran (that is in Arabia), and he (Muhummed) came with Ten Thousand Saints:3from his right hand went a fiery law For them.Deuteronomy 33: 2

Also, “Ahmed”, or “Muhummed”, the Praised one, is almost a translation of the Greek word Periclytos. In the present Gospel of John 14:16, 15:26, and 16:7, the word “Comforter” in the English version for the Greek word “Paracletos”, which means “Advocate”, “one called to the help of another, a kind friend”, rather than “Comforter”. Our doctors contend that Paracletos is a corrupt reading for Periclytos and that in the original saying of Jesus there was a prophecy of our holy Prophet Ahmed by name. Even if we read Paraclete, it would imply to the Holy Prophet, who is “a Mercy for all creatures” (H.Q. 21:107) and “most kind and merciful to the Believers” (H.Q. 9:128) See also note 416 to H.Q. 3:81.

Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth, is come. He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come. john 16: 13

Please note the Comforter in John 14: 26 can never be the “Holy Ghost” because Jesus (pbuh) had already explained—

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you Another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.John 14: 16

According to the rules of logic therefore, one is brought to see in John’s Paraclete a human being like Jesus, possessing the faculties of hearing and speech formally implied in John’s Greek text. Jesus therefore predicts that God will later send a human being to Earth to take up the role defined by John, i.e. to be a prophet who hears God’s word and repeats his message to man. This is the logical interpretation of John’s texts arrived at if one attributes to the words their proper meaning.

Again, do you know what this means?

And the first rejoinder:

I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and I will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.” Deuteronomy 18:18.

CAN NOT BE MUHAMMAD, AS THE LORD DID NOT PUT WORDS IN HIS MOUTH, BUT RATHER “JIBREEL” DID. AND, GOD WAS SPEAKING TO MOSES ABOUT THE JEWS WHO HAD ASKED FOR AN INTERCESSOR AT MOUNT HOREB. WAS MUHAMMAD A JEW?

And he (Moses) said, the Lord came from Sinai, and rose from Seir unto them; he shined Forth from mount Paran (that is in Arabia), and he (Muhummed) came with Ten Thousand Saints:3from his right hand went a fiery law For them.Deuteronomy 33: 2

THE “HE” IN THIS PASSAGE IS REFLEXIVE…TO GOD, NOT TO ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL. PLUS, CONTINUE ON TO VERSE 33:4, WHERE “THE LAW THAT MOSES GAVE US” IS CITED. MOSES GAVE THE LAW TO THE JEWS. AGAIN, WAS MUHAMMAD A JEW?

Also, “Ahmed”, or “Muhummed”, the Praised one, is almost a translation of the Greek word Periclytos. In the present Gospel of John 14:16, 15:26, and 16:7, the word “Comforter” in the English version for the Greek word “Paracletos”, which means “Advocate”, “one called to the help of another, a kind friend”, rather than “Comforter”. Our doctors contend that Paracletos is a corrupt reading for Periclytos and that in the original saying of Jesus there was a prophecy of our holy Prophet Ahmed by name.

WRONG – THERE ARE TEXTS ALMOST 400 YEARS OLDER THAN MUHAMMAD WHICH CLEARLY SAY “PARAKLETOS”

Even if we read Paraclete, it would imply to the Holy Prophet, who is “a Mercy for all creatures” (H.Q. 21:107) and “most kind and merciful to the Believers” (H.Q. 9:128) See also note 416 to H.Q. 3:81.

HOWEVER, JESUS WAS SPEAKING TO HIS DISCIPLES, WHO WERE JEWS. MUHAMMAD HAS NEVER BEEN KIND AND MERCIFUL TO JEWS (WHO ALSO ARE NOT CONSIDERED “BELIEVERS”). ALSO, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE REST OF SURA 9:128 – WHERE IT SAYS: NOW HATH COME UNTO YOU A MESSENGER FROM ‘AMONGST YOURSELVES’ (NOT FROM THE JEWS).

WRONG AGAIN. IF THE COMFORTER OR ADVOCATE WILL ABIDE WITH THEM (OR US) FOREVER, HE CAN NOT BE HUMAN, BECAUSE HUMANS DIE. HE CAN ALSO NOT BE MUHAMMAD BECAUSE MUHAMMAD DID NOT ARRIVE UNTIL NEARLY 500 YEARS AFTER THE LAST OF THE HEARERS OF THIS HAD DIED, SO HE WASN’T WITH THEM AT ALL. ALSO, THE IDEA THAT GOD (WHO IS SPIRIT) CAN NOT SPEAK OR HEAR IS LUDICROUS EVEN BY YOUR OWN TEXTS. OR, AS MUHAMMAD MIGHT SAY…ARE GOD’S HANDS CHAINED?

Jesus therefore predicts that God will later send a human being to Earth to take up the role defined by John, i.e. to be a prophet who hears God’s word and repeats his message to man. This is the logical interpretation of John’s texts arrived at if one attributes to the words their proper meaning. WHICH YOU HAVE NOT DONE.

HERE ARE MORE WORDS FROM JOHN: JOHN 5:46 – JESUS SAID “IF YOU BELIEVED MOSES, YOU WOULD BELIEVE ME, FOR HE (MOSES) WROTE ABOUT ME.”

——————————————————————————–

How about another comparison:

1) Moses was a Jew
2) He spoke with God “face to face,” that is, not through any mediator
3) He performed awesome miracles

none of this is true for Muhammad…it is all true for Jesus.

I think I’ll save the next part for another posting…this one’s already kinda long.

The Unbelievers say: “No messengers art thou.” Say: “Enough for a witness between me and you is Allah, and such as have knowledge of the Book.”

No – thanks for the input, though I’m not sure what you’re trying to say. Instead of pointing to a youtube video, please share your own thoughts.
