On Islamophobia

Posted by Godefroi on June 13, 2007

I hadn’t planned on writing anything of this sort until sometime that someone accused me of such (so, perhaps never), but since I’m seeing this label thrown around more than just about any other (except racist, which usually accompanies Islamophobe), I guess now is as good a time as any.

  • A monotheistic religion characterized by the acceptance of the doctrine of submission to God and to Muhammad as the chief and last prophet of God.

From Arabic ‘islām (submission), from ‘aslama (to surrender, to resign oneself), from Syriac ‘ašlem (to make peace, surrender), derived from stem of šlem (to be complete); see šlm in Semitic roots.

  • a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it.

Hence, someone with “Islamophobia” would have a persistent, irrational fear of the monotheistic religion characterized by…submission to God and to Muhammad as the chief and last prophet of God.

Let’s look at some Qur’anic verses briefly (Nod to pez for handily summarizing most of these at Jihad Watch)

2:10 Disbelievers are diseased.

2:99 Disbelievers are evil people.

2:104 For disbelievers is a painful doom.

2:171 Disbelievers are deaf, dumb, and blind.

2:216 You should be fighting against unbelievers, whether you like it or not

3:28 Let not the believers take disbelievers for their friends

3:73 Don’t believe anyone who is not a Muslim.

4:89 Have no unbelieving friends. Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them.

4:63 Oppose those who refuse to follow Muhammad.

4:74 Fighting for God – live or die – is the path to heavenly reward

4:101The disbelievers are an open enemy to you.

4:144 Do not choose disbelievers as friends.

5:51 Don’t take Jews or Christians for friends. If you do, then Allah will consider you to be one of them.

5:60 Allah turned unbelievers [Jews] into apes and swine.

5:59 Jews and Christians are evil people.

5:57 Don’t choose Jews, Christians, or disbelievers as guardians.

6:106 Stay away from disbelievers.

8:12 Fight the unbelievers – cut off their heads and fingertips

8:55 The worst beasts in Allah’s sight are the disbelievers.

9:5 Slay the disbelievers wherever you find them.

9:28 Disbelievers are unclean.

9:29 Fight all Christians and Jews until they are subjugated

9:111 Getting killed while killing others for God is the path to heavenly reward

Given these verses, I can’t see how fear of a religion that holds these to be commands from almighty God, to be carried out until the end of time, is irrational at all!

Now, having stated all that, I emphatically do not believe that all Muslims will take these verses the way that some do…that is, as a means to justify aggression and violence towards non-Muslims.  Although it is a stretch to state that Islam has been “hijacked by a tiny minority of extremists” I’m certain that the majority of Muslims simply want to worship their god and go about their lives without bothering anyone.

The fact remains, however, that there are too many citing these verses (and similar ones) to justify atrocity.  The problem, I believe, is that since their perfect word of god says (exhorts and glamorizes) these things, Islam is highly susceptible to being “hijacked”.  Until that changes, we “Infidels” are going to remain in peril.

One Response to “On Islamophobia”

  1. My own observations have led me to conclude that there is no one central authority that applies an agreed upon system of hermeneutics when dealing with problematic text in the Qur’an and the Hadiths. This leads to particularism between the various sects and sub-sects of Islam. Which is further exacerbated by the Islamic edict that every Muslim is responsible for his/her own interpretation and practice of the Qur’an.

So, in conclusion, until there is an amalgamation of the various Islamic sects, tempered with agreed upon Qur’anic hermeneutics by peaceful minded scholars, and an eradication of the precept for individual charge in the interpretion and practice of Islam, there will be no peace between Islam and the modern world…

    Just my two-cents…
